Anxiety and exhaustion are intertwined. I’ve found anxiety over time depletes and exhausts me. I just need rest. Here’s where I find rest. This is a poem about anxiety that doesn’t simply describe anxiety, but points to rest in the One who gives it.
If you’ve dealt with anxiety, and I think we all have to some degree, you know that anxiety is like a damp coat clinging to our bodies. Chills and adrenaline, followed by exhaustion.
I desperately need to remember the love of God in Christ. To remember the words in Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” These words are there for a reason — they’re true, and we need them — we need Him.
This poem about anxiety reflects the simplicity of being lifted by the Lord and finding that all my needs for rest are already met in Him. He secured rest for me over 2,000 years ago and He freely offers it to me today as I “come to Him.” I don’t need to pick myself up by the bootstraps or fix anything before coming to Him. I simply need to come — broken, anxious, and in need.
Praise the Lord for His great love. I hope this poem encourages you to take a deep breath and consider the rest Christ offers. Keep enjoying the written word, friends. It’s a gift!
